Violin Guitar Duet at Board & Batten Events in Lexington, NC
We loved Lexie & Preston’s black & white December wedding day! What better way to end the year and begin the 2023 year than a wedding day in Lexington, NC celebrating with family and friends. With the chilly winter day, our violinist and guitarist played indoors for ceremony.
The musicians arrived to setup at Board and Batten Events around 4:15pm. Prelude began at 6:00, and Lexie and Preston’s ceremony began at 6:30pm and concluded right around 7:00pm. Prior to wedding day, it was forecasted that we may be needed to play indoors due to the temperature minimums while a speaker was pointed toward the door outside. However, with the weather warm enough to play outdoors, we were happy to adjust as needed.
Planning
Working alongside both Caitlin Dobbins and Mikayla Thomas as the couple’s coordinators made the flow of the day spectacular! Especially with 180 guests in attendance on the big day, we love working with planners. Planners are also super important on wedding days to help assist with song change cues. Executing five song changes can be quite a challenge, but working with experienced planners and reviewing song orders prior to ceremony start makes a world of difference. We have also often found that the more time between groups of those walking down the aisle along with the bridal party and generally slower pacing is best for song flow.
Decor
One of our favorite decor elements of the couple’s wedding day was seeing all the black and white aesthetics. It’s always so much fun to see how uniquely personalized each and every wedding is. The musicians wore formal and professional all black attire to fit in with the formality of the wedding day.
Music Behind the Scenes
For prelude and cocktail hour, the couple entrusted us with the majority of the song selections and noted that they would like to hear songs that were a little more on the modern side while interspersing song selections of their choice.
“Die a Happy Man” - This is often seen as a tricky song to play; however, by listening to it in preparation, the musicians can play it by ear and prepare to end the song as soon as receiving the cue for a song change.
“Here Comes the Sun” - This song was played for 7 groomsmen. By looping the main section and keeping it simple, the violinist and guitarist could make it sound like the end whenever needed, so that the transition to the next song was smooth.
“I Get to Love You” - We began this song at the lyrics which helped us get to play a little more of the song instead of the guests hearing mainly introduction.
“A Thousand Years” - As always, this one can be tricky to play for the bride, if the bride walks quickly. The musicians marked possible skips so that we could cut out some of the intro or some of the verse, to get to the chorus more quickly. It’s our goal to start the chorus when the bride starts walking down the aisle (or before). Once at the chorus, we repeat it and crescendo until the bride is down the aisle.
“Photograph,” “Bubbly,” and “Payphone” were also in our repertoire to practice for this wedding. All of the preparation on-site before ceremony and cocktail hour ensures that every moment is well executed.
